It's all about the numbers when you're shopping for a credit card. Interest rates, credit limits, grace periods, balance transfer fees, over-the-limit charges

Questions you should ask before you apply:

Do they offer an introductory interest rate? How long does the introductory period last? Will it apply only to new purchases, balance transfers, or both?
What will my long-term or "go-to" rate be after the introductory period ends?
Will I be charged an application fee or other processing fees when I apply?
What is the annual fee? Is it possible to have it waived the first year?
What are the interest rates for balance transfers and cash advances? Are there additional fees for these transactions?
If the APR is variable, when and how may it change? If the APR is fixed, when and how may it change?
What is the grace period before interest charges apply?
In case I run intro problems, what are the penalty fees for late payments and over-the-limit charges? Are there any other penalty fees or other fees I should know about?
What is the default APR in case I default on any terms of my cardmember agreements?
How will I be informed of any changes in the contract, such as changes to the APR and other cardmember benefits?
